چکیده

The clinical evaluation of the hallux abducto valgus deformity is extremely important. It is imperative that the nature and type of deformity are identified and documented to understand the presenting problem unique to each patient. Of equal importance is the fact that many patients presenting with hallux abducto valgus and associated symptoms will require surgical intervention to adequately treat the pathologic condition. In view of this fact, the physician is required to not only evaluate the local complaint, but also must determine the patient's status with respect to surgery and postoperative recovery.

The relationship of abnormal foot pronation to hallux abducto valgus--a pilot study.

Abnormal foot mechanics is the most common cause of hallux abducto valgus. To date no quantitative data regarding the relationship between abnormal foot mechanics and the degree of hallux abducto valgus has been presented. An outline of the abnormal foot mechanics responsible for hallux abducto valgus is described along with a technique for measuring the extent of abnormal function. A common in...

Follow-up of the isolated medial approach to hallux abducto valgus correction without interspace release.

A retrospective radiographic review was performed of 29 patients (37 feet) who underwent an isolated medial approach for correction of hallux abducto valgus deformity from March 1993 to November 1998. Only those patients who had a traditional Austin-type osteotomy with a reducible first metatarsophalangeal joint and flexible first ray were included in the study. The average follow-up period for...

Analysis of dynamic angle of gait and radiographic features in subjects with hallux abducto valgus and hallux limitus.

BACKGROUND Hallux abducto valgus and hallux limitus are two commonly encountered foot deformities causing altered structure and function of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and subsequent compensatory mechanisms. This study was undertaken to determine the relationships between these two deformities and transverse plane position of the foot, or angle of gait, and several radiographic angular ...

Nonsurgical treatment for hallux abducto valgus with botulinum toxin A.

Hallux abducto valgus is a frequently seen abnormality of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Limited conservative treatment options exist, making surgery the only definitive treatment option for a mild-to-moderate deformity. A problem arises if the patient is not a surgical candidate owing to comorbidities, noncompliance, or personal reasons, such as work or family obligations. We describe a ...

Relationship between proximal articular set angle and hallux abducto valgus.

A study of radiographs from 50 males and 50 females was undertaken to determine whether a relationship existed between the proximal articular set angle and the hallux abductus angle. Gender differences in the relationship were also investigated. The normal range for the proximal articular set angle was -2.6 degrees to 8.6 degrees, with a mean of 5 degrees. There was no significant difference in...
